Behaviour Training For Ruby

Hi,

I was talking about my problem with Ruby bullying Jack in one of the pet shops that I go to, and the shop owner suggested some behaviour training for Ruby.

The shop owner is a dog trainer himself and he offered me 6 personal lessons and 6 group lessons for about $1,000!

Wow! That is a lot of money and he did not guarantee me results at any time and I did not want to put him in a spot either.

So I told him that I will consult my wife first...heee....hee....

I also shared my problem with my son's tutor and this behaviour training offer since she has 2 dogs too. She told me that one of her dogs attended his training and results were not very obvious.

Well, I decided to go to the local community library and surf the Internet to research for some solutions instead.

Crate Train Your Dogs

Hi,

I have Jack crate trained since he was a puppy and he love to nap in his crates and we also observed that he likes the small and cosy ones more than the big one I bought for him.

There are benefits in crate training your dog as it is their private space where they seek some peace and quiet when they need it. Also, a form of security for them. You can also use it to potty train your puppy as they will not soil it unless they cannot help it.

And finally, if you stay in a flat or apartment, you may need to crate you dog when you are out else it may mess up your home; eg chew up your furniture, urine or pooh on your carpet, etc...

Luckily, Ruby does not mind sharing her crates with Jack during the day. Ruby has one crate in the car porch and another one at the back of the house, in the dry kitchen. Ruby loves to go inside her crate at night or when it rains with thnder and lightning.

He still likes to go back to his old crate which was meant for Ruby. Jack used this crate since he was a puppy.












This is a new crate we bought for Ruby as the one above was cracking up due to wear and tear and I have to used some industrial tape to hold the cover in place. It is a bit smaller but Jack loves it anyway. Luckily, Ruby does not mind sharing it with Jack but she sleeps in it at night inside the house.

Jack & Ruby Performing the TURN Trick

Hi,

This is the latest video on Jack the Beagle and Ruby the Corgi learning how to turn upon command.

Jack the old man ( he is 10 years old now ) can still learn the new trick though he is easily distracted by the treat.

To-date, sad to say, they will not turn upon command without any treat!

Fluffy Doing Her Dog Tricks

We were inspired by Fluffy doing her dog t4rick like Turn, Roll and Bang ( playing dead ); as shown in the video below.

If you have read my earlier posting, we have started training our Jack and Ruby to turn too. They got it after 1 week plus, but with treats as an incentive.

So have a look at my niece, Rachel, asking her Fluffy to perform for us during our visit to their home in Melbourne, Australia.

Jack the Beagle & Ruby the Corgi - New Trick

Hi,

During our holidays in Melbourne, we were inspired to teach Jack and Ruby some new tricks after seeing Fluffy, the Maltese mixed dog, performing them.

I started to train both Jack and Ruby how to turn using treats upon the first day home; twice a day.

Jack was more interested in the treat and kept barking for it, not co-operative at all.

But Ruby was a good learner and can followed the instructions.

So I was telling myself that Jack is 10 years old so it might be difficult to teach an old dog new trick..... !

But hang on..... Jack was a fast learner too when he saw what Ruby did and that she got praises and treats too.... (I also gave Jack his share of treats eventhough he did not do what I wanted else he would not stop barking. )

After 1 week of patience, the results were evident and both dogs were responding to the training. I even managed to get them to do it without the treats a few times only..... Ultimately, they should be doing it that way and occassionally rewarded with treats else they will go fat....!!! Ha..ha..ha...

So here is a short video of Jack the 10 years old Beagle and Ruby the 5 years old Corgi doing the turn at the same time ..... viola...!

A Few Tips on Dog Training

Hi,

I hope you enjoyed watching the videos on my training of Jack the Beagle and Ruby the Corgi.

While we paid for a professional dog trainer for Jack and he even graduated with a certiifcate, we still need to continuous reinforce the commands and teach Jack new command; eg he just learned how to paw!

Importantly, I strongly suggest that you seek guidance from a professional dog trainer as they shold be experienced and can also share tips on grooming, dog behaviour, etc... which you may not find them in the books you read. This is foundation that will lead you to care for your dog during his lifetime.

Of course, you can also get hold of some dog training books or resources like videos to help you. Do read widely and then use them to guide you.

It is practice, practice and practice until you and the dog gets the commands correctly.

So you need to have time and be patient if you want to see results in your training.

Honestly, you must be surprised at why Jack does not respond to some of my instructions immediately and I emphasize so much on practice. Well, though we got Lance, our professional dog trainer, to show us how to train Jack the basic commands, we were working late daily so we only have time to train Jack during the weekends. It is not as effective as it should be if you do not find time to train your dog daily.

I hope you have found the above helpful and please do enjoy your training and practicing of the commands with your dog. Have fun during the sessions and not be frustrated if you do not get immediate results. If so, get some advices or go back to your resources and see if you have done something wrong.

Ruby was adopted by us a few years back but he was trained to respond to Sit, Down, Paw and Come commands.

Training my Beagle dog - Jack

A short clip to show the training that we have done with Jack my Beagle.

We still try to reinforce the training and Jack is never too old to learn new commands too; eg. he just recently learned how to paw...!

Jack My Beagle - Training Certificate

We got instructors to help us train Jack to follow the basic commands like Sit, Stay, Heel, Down and Stay as we have never trained a dog before and we wanted to do it the right way. We were alwyas working late during that period and we want to make sure we know how to handle Jack properly.

The instructor, Lance, specilises in Beagle dogs and he was trained in USA. Lance brought along another trainer too; so we got 2 trainers for the price of one!

We were issued the certificate below at the end of the training session.
