Recall of Baked Dog Treats Containing Peanut Butter

American Health Kennels, Inc. Announces a Voluntary Recall of Baked Dog Treats Containing Peanut Butter.


FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Pompano Beach, Florida -- February 13, 2009 -- As a result of the expanded recall by the Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) Blakely, Georgia facility, American Health Kennels, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for certain baked dog treats containing peanut butter supplied by PCA. The Blakely PCA facility is the subject of an ongoing U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation into potential Salmonella contamination of peanut butter. American Health Kennels, Inc does not know that any of the peanut butter from PCA that was used in our process was infected with salmonella. The parameters in our formulation and baking process (280F) are well in excess of the CDC’s guidelines (190F) for an effective salmonella bacteria kill; further American Health Kennels Inc. has had no reports of illness associated with our products.

We are effecting this recall in the interest of public safety even though we know our product is safe.

According to the FDA, pets with salmonellosis may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may exhibit milder systems such as decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain while other pets may show no symptoms at all. Well animals can be carriers and transmit the bacteria to other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and exhibits these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

While the risk of animals contracting salmonellosis is minimal, there is risk to humans from handling these products. It is important for people to wash their hands--and make sure children wash their hands--before and, especially, after feeding treats to pets.

Jack is Sick -with Diarrhoea

Hi,

Jack has been vomiting the whole of yesterday and passed out blood instead of any stool this morning...!!!

We were very worried indeed and rushed him to the vet.

Jack was very quiet in the car which was very unusual as he would normally be reckless and walked all over the backseat of the car.

When we weighed him at the vet office, he has lost 2 kg ( from 18 to 16 kg ). Maybe from his vomiting and not holding on to his food and water intake...?

The vet asked us if we were aware of any foreign items that Jack could have swallowed from our garden or during his walks but we could not remember of such incidents. He was normal one day and then vomited the next day.

We decided to do a blood test and the results were good, nothing abnormal..!

So Jack was give an injection to reduce any inflammation in his tummy and antibiotics plus medication for his vomiting and diarrhoea.

After the visit, Jack was better and was reckless in the backseat of the car on the way home.

As at this evening, Jack is not totally recovered but definitely more lively and no more vomiting and diarrhoea.......

Importantly, the blood test results also told us that his liver and kidney are doing well and no diabetes as we were concerned that he drinks a lot and pees a lot daily, a bit unusual compared to Ruby.

Poor Jack, hope you get well very soon like tomorrow.....

Ruby Learning To Chew Her Raw Hide Treat

Hi,

Ruby does not like to chew too much and would swallow her raw hide treat without giving it a good chew.

So I decided to teach her to chew properly by holding on to the treat and let her chew on it slowly bit by bit.

I have done it a few times and it seems to be working well now.

I also noticed that her constant chewing has helped to remove some tartar on her back teeth.

Jack My Beagle

Hi,

This is a short video on Jack after he has finished chewing on his raw hide treat and watching me teach Ruby to chew on the same treat properly.

Jack has to be leashed else he might run at me and Ruby and go for her treat.

When it comes to food or treats, Jack and Ruby are no longer buddies!

Jack has aged as he is now 12 years old.

Two cloned beagle puppies

Hi,

Two cloned beagle puppies named as 'Magic' and 'Stem' sleep at a lab of a South Korean biotech firm, RNL Bio.

RNL Bio said on it has developed a new method to clone dogs using stem cells derived from fat tissue that greatly increases the likelihood of success.

The two cloned beagle puppies were born on January 27.

Well, just as much as I love Jack my beagle...... I would not want to clone him but rather have good memories of our lives together...

Our reply is one son and 2 dogs!

Jack And Ruby Waiting For Our Return

Hi,

I took this photo of Jack and Ruby waiting for us to return home.

Normally, Ruby and Jack would rush to the gate but I told them to stay so that I could take this photo.

Jack likes to lie between the wall and his crate, more cosy and protected......?

Ruby would be behind the crate and hidden unless she gets distracted by passby, etc......

Obese Beagle Goes On Diet

Jack my beagle could end up like the obese beagle reported below if we do not watch how much he eats as Jack has a bottomless pit... ha..ha....

A dog so obese he is unable to walk has been being placed on an extreme low-fat diet by vets.

Patch weighed 28kg when he was brought in to the Dogs Trust centre in Glasgow just before Christmas after his owner passed away.

His legs could not support his weight - roughly equivalent to an eight-year-old child - so he had to be carried around in a special harness.

The centre's staff want to get the six-year-old Beagle Cross into shape.

Their aim over the next few months is to slim him down to a more manageable 15kg.

Patch's weight leaves him at grave risk of developing heart failure, diabetes, liver disease, pancreatitis or arthritis.

Dogs that have been overfed can exercise to reduce their weight - what has happened with Patch is that his weight has prevented him exercising

However, he risks organ failure if he loses weight too quickly.

Staff are therefore placing him on a gradual exercise programme, consisting of short daily walks in his harness and hydrotherapy sessions.

So please do not over-feed your dogs .....!

Drying Up After A Bath

Hi,

Here are a few photos taken of Jack and Ruby drying up under the sun after they were given a bath.

Jack must be enjoying the sun, even lifted up his hind leg....ha..ha...ha....

Ruby has quite a thick fur so drying her under the sun is much easier, after useing a towel to dry her as much as possible.

Otherwise, she would run around the garden and make a mess of herself.........
