Jack in Ruby's Crate
Caught Jack sleeping in Ruby's new crate for his afternoon nap.
Jack got his own big crate but somehow like to cramp himself inside Ruby's crate, more cosy?
The second photo showed Jack's head outside the crate and on the floor...ha..ha....
My wife said he needs a pillow..ha...ha...!
Look at how Jack curled his body inside the crate.
When Jack straightened his body inside the crate, his head is outside and on the floor...ha..ha.....!
Yet, he was ok with it....?

Jack and Ruby - Afternoon Nap
Took this photo from the window with my mobile or cellphone.
Ruby loves to lie on her back and it is very unusual indeed. But my friends from the Corgi community told me that their Corgis do it too...ha..ha...ha....
Jack sleeps in various positions but never on his back like Ruby. Maybe he is too big to do the balancing act.
So how does your dog sleep....?

San Francisco SPCA Warns of Increase in Deadly Dog Disease Canine Parvovirus Linked to San Francisco Parks
San Francisco (PRWEB) November 10, 2008 — The San Francisco SPCA today warned that its Veterinary Hospital has seen a dramatic increase in the number of young and adolescent dogs it has diagnosed with Canine Parvovirus - seven cases this month compared to one case per month in past years. All of the infected dogs have spent time in Golden Gate Park and in the Haight District. “We urge all dog guardians who frequent these areas to make sure their dogs’ inoculations are current,” said Jan McHugh-Smith, President of The SF/SPCA.
“We can treat dogs with Parvo, although it is a serious and life threatening disease,” said Dr. Jack Aldridge, Director of Veterinary Services at The SF/SPCA. “There is a survival rate of almost 80%, if it is treated quickly. Symptoms of the disease include lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog has these symptoms, take him/her to your veterinarian right away.”
Canine Parvovirus is a hardy virus that can persist in the environment. Prevention includes inoculation against the disease, which is spread through contact with feces or vomit containing the virus. Contamination is known to exist on objects such as clothing, food dishes, floors and the earth for five months or longer, in the right conditions.
Puppies should not be exposed to infected areas until their vaccination series is complete. The generally recommended protocol is to vaccinate puppies against parvovirus beginning at 6-8 weeks of age, and revaccinating every 3 weeks until the puppy is 16-20 weeks of age. A booster is given at one year of age and every 1-3 years thereafter.

Getting a Puppy For A Christmas Present ?
I strongly believe that dog owners must be responsible and know what they are in for as having a puppy or a dog is a lifetime committment.
A puppy or a dog is not just a toy!
Here is an interesting article on getting someone a puppy as a present.
Dog Talk With Uncle Matty: Holiday Puppies
By Matthew “Uncle Matty” Margolis
Warm and cute. Wide-eyed and innocent. Peering out of a box once tied with a big red bow. Who wouldn't want a puppy for Christmas?
But that's not the question. The question is: Who's a good candidate to receive such a gift?
The problem with holiday puppies has everything to do with the holidays. It's a chaotic time, and puppies need stability and routine. They require significant one-on-one attention, which is hard to give while prepping hors d'oeuvres, filling glasses and basting a turkey.
And it's even harder to give en route from JFK to LAX with a connecting at O'Hare. Holiday travel simply leaves no time for puppy.
But even for those staying put for the holiday season, the home itself is often turned on its head, filled with strange people coming and going, doors opening and closing, lights blinking, candles burning, cords tangled up behind that irresistible glowing tree playing host to a cornucopia of bite-sized glass ornaments. All dangerous for puppy.
People who give the gift of a puppy often have their hearts in the right place. In many ways, a puppy embodies the spirit of Christmas: hopeful, playful, joyful, and full of life and love.
But a puppy isn't merchandise that can be returned like a lamp. A dog of any age is a living, breathing, sensitive creature that demands and deserves the time and attention it takes to make him a welcome and permanent member of the family.
The frenetic nature of most households during the time leading up to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's in no way lends itself to the essential introductory and bonding period that forms the foundation of the human-canine relationship. Strike one.
Then there's housebreaking. If the dog owner is consumed with cleaning, cooking, shopping and wrapping, the dog probably isn't steeped in the Feed-Water-Walk system that leads to successful housebreaking. Strike two.
And from a motivational standpoint, if it's 28 degrees outside, it's that much more unappealing to get up and take puppy out two or three times between sundown and sunrise. Strike three. Why don't people give puppies for the Fourth of July?
The reality is that many -- far too many -- holiday puppies are returned to pet stores or abandoned in shelters come January. This being the case, the description of the best candidate to receive a puppy for Christmas looks something like:
-- has very few friends
-- has no travel plans
-- received minimal party invitations
-- loves freezing walks in the dead of night
-- hates holiday decorations, doesn't open the door to carolers, and refuses to buy or bake sweets of any kind, but especially those containing chocolate.
Lucky pooch.
All that considered, a puppy is still a personal choice. Not everyone wants one. Not everyone can take care of one. And those who want and are able to care for one will also want to be involved in the process of finding their perfect pup.
This year, instead of giving an actual puppy, why not give a puppy starter kit to someone you suspect might really love to have a dog? The kit could include a few books or videos on dog training, a soft chew toy, a blanket, a crate with good visibility, and a gift certificate for a trip to a shelter or rescue on you -- or any combination of the above!
In the end, if it turns out that puppy person is actually a cat person, no harm done. Everything in the box wrapped with the big red bow is as it should be -- merchandise that can be returned.
Woof!

Who Has Been Killing My Lawn Grass?
I finally caught Jack my Beagle redhanded, peeing on some patches of grass in my garden lawn and his urine is killing the grass...!
When I consulted the gardener in a nearby nursery on why there are dead patches of grass in my garden lawn, he suggested a few reasons and one of them was that it could be due to the urine from my 2 dogs.
Well, I am trying to train Jack to urine in the same spot if possible. Somewhere not so obvious and an eye sore, I suppose.
No wonder it can be quite smelly when we sit by the windows at times.... thanks to Jack!

Everyone knows that chocolate is bad for dogs, but what about chewing gum?
Luke Simcoe, Saskatchewan news Network; Canwest News Service
Published: Friday, November 07, 2008
SASKATOON -- Everyone knows that chocolate is bad for dogs, but what about chewing gum?
Tamara Hergott's seven-year-old beagle, Satchmo, is lucky to be alive after getting his paws on a package of Stride-brand gum.
"He ate the whole thing, wrapper and all," Hergott said.
The gum contained xylitol, a low-calorie sweetener used in a wide-range of products including gum, mints, chewable vitamins and some baked goods.
While safe for humans -- it's touted as an alternative for diabetics and good for dental health -- xylitol can be exceptionally harmful for dogs.
According to Maxie Krueger with the western college of veterinary medicine, xylitol can trigger hypoglycemia -- low blood sugar -- in dogs. High doses have been shown to cause liver damage or even liver failure.
Fortunately for Satchmo, Hergott caught him in the act and rushed him to the veterinarian. They induced vomiting, and although all the gum was thrown up, the dog was kept overnight on an IV drip and his blood sugar was closely monitored.
Satchmo didn't suffer any permanent damage, but Hergott says the vet told her the amount of gum the dog ate could have been fatal.
"If we wouldn't have noticed that he ate the gum, he would probably be dead," she said.
This isn't the first time Satchmo's indiscriminating appetite has got him in trouble. Among other eating mishaps, Hergott says the beagle once downed some chocolate during a Christmas dinner. Similar measures had to be taken, but the results weren't as serious.

Crate Train Your Dogs
I have Jack crate trained since he was a puppy and he love to nap in his crates and we also observed that he likes the small and cosy ones more than the big one I bought for him.
There are benefits in crate training your dog as it is their private space where they seek some peace and quiet when they need it. Also, a form of security for them. You can also use it to potty train your puppy as they will not soil it unless they cannot help it.
And finally, if you stay in a flat or apartment, you may need to crate you dog when you are out else it may mess up your home; eg chew up your furniture, urine or pooh on your carpet, etc...
Luckily, Ruby does not mind sharing her crates with Jack during the day. Ruby has one crate in the car porch and another one at the back of the house, in the dry kitchen. Ruby loves to go inside her crate at night or when it rains with thnder and lightning.
For more info on crate training your dog, please visit my other site dedicated to the subject matter at http://www.squidoo.com/crate-train-puppy where you will see photos and videos of them in their crates.
This is Jack's crate, a bit too big for him ..?
He still likes to go back to his old crate which was meant for Ruby. Jack used this crate since he was a puppy.
This is a new crate we bought for Ruby as the one above was cracking up due to wear and tear and I have to used some industrial tape to hold the cover in place. It is a bit smaller but Jack loves it anyway. Luckily, Ruby does not mind sharing it with Jack but she sleeps in it at night inside the house.

Adopt A Dog Perks
Singapore has its Baby Bonus to encourage more children... and now we have some perks if you adopt a dog too.
So what do you get?
As part of World Animal Day, Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) and Pet Lovers Centre have come up with the Pet Adoption Initiative to encourage Singaporeans to adopt a pet instead of buying one. They will be given a hamper of food vouchers, canned food, vitamins and toys, as well as advice on caring for their new
pet.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) gets an average of 250 lost or unwanted dogs each month, and ASD takes in five to 15 dogs each month.

Ruby Barking Got Her Into Trouble Again
My neighbour, on my left, has complained about Ruby's barking at night and that they could not sleep.
We used to crate her at night but then decided to let her out and see what happened a few months ago.
Ruby likes to bark at thunder and lightning, airplanes and even some noises that could be of high pitch I believe.
So I believe it has been raining these past few nights and Ruby must have been barking like crazy! When it rains with thunder and lightning, we crate her else she would be barking at the sky and running in the garden too, getting herself wet.
We could not hear a thing as we sleep with our air-conditioning switched on but my neighbour sleep with their windows opened at night.
We used to have similar problems with Jack when he was a puppy as he also barked at cats, frogs, etc..... We also crated him until he was much older and he has mellowed now.
Lucikily, Ruby does not mind being crated and she happily walks into the house and into the crate placed in our laundry area every night.
Here is a video of it :
However, I observed that she has very sensitive ears. One sunny afternoon, she was barking again and I could not see what was bothering her. Then about 15 minutes later, the sky turned dark and it rained.
I concluded that she must have heard some thunder and lightning faraway and knew it was going to rain....!
Anyway, we love you Ruby!

Spot The Terrier
I came across photos of this terrier dog named Spot.
Spot was offered to us for adoption and we took him home to see if Jack can accepts him. This was in the year 2004.
Spot was a bit active for Jack but they got along well.
We have Spot for a night and our neighbour complained of his barking overnight so we decided to return Spot..... sigh....
I believed Spot was eventually adopted by another home in the neighbourhood but we have not seen it since then.
So here are sweet memories of Spot in the slideshow below ...... we miss you, Spot !

John - Our Beagle-mixed Dog
We adopted John the Beagle-mixed dog about 4 years ago.
He was very loveable and demanded our attention.
It was most unfortunate that our new housekeeper then opened the gate too wide and John ran out of the house.
Despite our efforts, we could not find him.....
Here are 2 photos of John that I found in my old PC.
We miss you, John......!!!

We Must Be Responsible Dog Owners
No matter how much we love our pet dogs, we must also be aware that they could be pampered and also not well trained or socialised with the public. Also, we must respect that the some people are not comfortable with dogs, big or small.
We must always leash our dogs in public areas and also ensure that our dogs do not rush out of the house or gate.
In short, we must be considerate and responsible dog owners.
Here is a recent news on a dog attack and the consequences of it .
=================================================================
DOG OWNER FINED $6,000
Ansley Ng
ansley@mediacorp.com.sg
A WOMAN was fined $6,000 by a district court yesterday, after her five
Rottweilers dashed out of her Kembangan home and attacked a smaller dog
last November.
Ms Satpal Kaur Narula, an information technology business owner,
was convicted of six charges of not leashing or muzzling her dogs — a
breed favoured as guard dogs due to their large size and fearsome
appearance.
In handing out the fine, District Judge May Mesenas said she considered
the fact that Ms Satpal, 51, had taken sufficient steps to prevent future
incidents, such as keeping her dogs in the backyard and building a divider
and a gate to keep them in.
Ms Satpal also sent her dogs for training, her lawyer Mr Satwant Singh
told the court.
During a mediation session yesterday, she had apologised to Mr David Ow,
the neighbour whose Jack Russell was attacked by the Rottweilers. She also
paid him an undisclosed sum as compensation, part of which would be
donated to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Said the judge: "I hope this will not happen again ... This time the
victim is a dog, but next time, children might be there."
The attack took place along Lengkong Tiga on Nov 26 and was stopped by
police officers who were driving past.
Mr Ow's dog was badly injured. While the Rottweilers did not attack Mr Ow,
the businessman fell and hurt himself while trying to protect his pet.

Please be cautious and do not assume that your dog or other dogs are so well behaved that such accident would not happen to you.

Oldest Dog Dies At Age 29 !
By Sarah Knapton
Last Updated: 9:05PM BST 08 Sep 2008
Until Bella the record for the oldest dog was held by Butch, a 28-year-old from America who died in 2003.
Bella, a Labrador cross, was bought by David Richardson from the RSPCA, 26 years ago when she was three years old.
She had lived with Mr Richardson, 76, and his partner Daisy, 81, since 1982 in Clay Cross, Derbyshire.
But she was put down on Saturday following a heart attack while on holiday with the couple.
Until Bella the record for the oldest dog was held by Butch, a 28-year-old from America who died in 2003, according to the Guinness World Records. Officially, the oldest ever dog was Bluey, a sheepdog from Australia, who lived to 29.
Although Mr Richardson, from Clay Cross, has no official documentation to prove Bella's age, he insists she was 29.
"We had just come up to Mablethorpe – we always go to the same place on holiday because we can take the dogs," said Mr Richardson.
"We had barely been here for an hour when Bella started panting and yelping and collapsed in front of the sofa.
"We took Bella to the vet but she was so ill she had to be put to sleep. It was very upsetting. We will miss her a lot.
"Lots of people came to see us and to wish Bella goodbye. Our friends and neighbours were very fond of her,
The RSPCA does not hold records stretching back to when Mr Richardson bought Bella and the Guinness World Records says Bella could not have been included because their was no documentation.

Have You Microchipped Your Dog ?
Both Jack and Ruby have been microchipped; Ruby since young and Jack recently only.
You should microchip your dog as soon as possible and you will not regret it.
Why?
Here is a good reason for doing it........ read the news below .
*Dog's chip reunites toddler with mom*
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL --- A special microchip in a family dog helped
officials reunite a wandering two-year-old girl with her family after
girl and dog were spotted wandering along Southwest Tulip Boulevard
Tuesday.
According to a police report released Tuesday, two neighbors spotted
Annabelle Fabrizio walking along the street in just her diaper behind
the family dog at about 7:45 a.m. on Saturday. The two Good
Samaritans then stopped Annabelle and moved her and the dog out of the
road.
An animal control official scanned Willy, a Shar Pei mix, for an
identification chip and turned up a woman's phone number. That person
said she gave the dog to a friend, Melissa Fabrizio, 28, of the 300
block of Southwest Tulip Boulevard, the girl's mother.
At that home, investigators found a 16-year-old boy, who said he was
babysitting Fabrizio's children, Annabelle and an eight-year-old boy.
The babysitter said Annabelle was sleeping, but when he checked her
room she wasn't there.
"I was out with the girlfriends Friday night and it got really late so
I called the babysitter, said I was going to crash for the night, and
I'd be home in the morning," Fabrizio explained Tuesday. "Then I got a
call from the police department in the morning."
Fabrizio said the 16-year-old boy is a friend's son.
She figured Annabelle, a bright-eyed girl with no shortage of energy,
rose before the sitter and opened the back door.
She let the dog out and followed him, Fabrizio said.
The officer said the dog never left her side.
Asked what would've happened had Willy not had a chip, Fabrizio said
she would have been going nuts.
"She's my baby girl," Fabrizio said. "I take every precaution with her."
Police did not charge the mother or the boy.
The chips are about the size of a grain of rice and typically are
injected by veterinarians with a syringe on the scruff of a dog or
cat's neck, said Todd Wallace, animal control crew leader.
Although there are several manufacturers, the chips generally work the
same way. When they're scanned by a special reader, a number comes up.
Animal control officials call the chip manufacturer and supply the
manufacturer the number. The manufacturer then provides the owner's
contact information. The chips cost about $25.

My Dad Loves My Dogs Too
My father is visiting me for a week and he not a dog person though he has met Ruby and Jack during his previous visits.
He lives in Penang, Malaysia, north of Singapore and his last visit to my home was 2.5 years ago! But I have been flying up north to see almost every quarter, of course.
Anyway, he says he likes Ruby the Corgi as she is so furry and cuddly.
I suppose it is partly because Ruby loves attention whereas Jack has an attitude and only comes to you when there is some treat or going out for a walk...ha...ha...ha...
Here are a few photos of my Dad and the dogs........
Well, at least, Jack and Ruby do not fight for your attention but only when you are giving them some treat.... both will rush at you!
